US Dollar Weakens Against Yen Amid Joint Market Intervention
The US dollar experienced a significant decline against the Japanese yen after market interventions were confirmed by both US President Donald Trump and Japan's Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama. The dollar had been trading above 163 yen before the intervention, but after regulators stepped in, it fell to below 160 yen.
Trump stated that the US had a good relationship with Japan and provided 'financial benefit' through the intervention, calling it a 'signal of friendship.' He also mentioned that Japan's weakening currency was a source of frustration for Tokyo, as it increases inflation due to high import prices.
Finance Minister Katayama confirmed the joint effort between the US Treasury Department and Japan's finance ministry, stating that they had purchased yen to counter excessive volatility in the market. This move is rare, with Neil Newman from Astris Advisory Japan noting that such overt acknowledgement of market intervention is not common.
