US Dollar Weakens as Bond Buyback Gambit Falls Flat
The US Dollar (USD) has weakened against the Australian Dollar (AUD), pushing the AUD/USD pair above 0.7100, as traders view the US Treasury's bond buyback gambit as a temporary fix rather than a long-term solution to US debt concerns.
The USD decline comes after US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that the Treasury could increase bond buybacks beyond $4 billion, partly to signal that current yields do not reflect underlying economic fundamentals. This move has been met with skepticism by markets, which have grown wary of the deteriorating fiscal picture and worries about the credibility of US institutions.
Australia's labor data also weighed on the pair, as employment unexpectedly fell by 15,800 jobs in July, pushing the Unemployment Rate up to 4.5%. While disappointing, this figure is not expected to cap the upside for the AUD/USD pair, which remains firmly bullish in the near term.
