US Economy Adds Jobs, But Strains Remain Beneath Surface
The latest US economic numbers show mixed results. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that nonfarm payrolls increased by 162,000 jobs in August, beating the average monthly gain of 31,000 over the prior 12 months. This is a positive sign, but there are still significant challenges ahead.
Despite the increase in job numbers, the unemployment rate remains at 4.1%, with about 7 million people unemployed. The labor force grew by 683,000 people in August, lifting labor-force participation to 61.6%. However, participation remains 0.5 percentage point below where it stood in January.
Average hourly pay rose 10 cents in August to $37.75, but over the past year, average hourly earnings increased only 3.1%. The employment-to-population ratio edged up to 59.1%, but affordability remains a crisis for working families, with prices rising 3.4% over the 12 months through July.
