US Economy Depends Heavily on Canada, Contradicting Trump's Claims

US President Donald Trump claims his country doesn't need Canada, but the numbers tell a different story. Roughly 4 million barrels of Canadian crude oil flow south every day to fuel American cars, trucks, and airplanes, as well as supply U.S. industry.

The US imports more than 20% of its petroleum consumption from Canada, making energy a major part of their intertwined economies. In fact, Canada is the second-largest US trading partner after Mexico, with over $872 billion in goods and services exchanged last year.

Despite Trump's claim that the US doesn't need Canada, he has imposed 50% tariffs on Canadian aluminum while acknowledging his country badly needs the metal to fuel its industry. This contradiction highlights the complex trade relationship between the two nations.

Daniel Béland, a political science professor at McGill University, says Trump's claim is 'absolutely false' due to US reliance on Canadian oil and natural gas, as well as integrated industries such as autos. The White House has also portrayed the relationship in negative terms, saying Canada takes roughly $50 billion a year from the US.

However, much of this gap reflects US purchases of Canadian energy, which helps power its economy. In fact, without energy, the US would have run a trade surplus last year. The two countries' economies are so intertwined that measures aimed at hurting one nation's industries could also hurt producers in the other country.

Canada has long been the dominant foreign source of aluminum for the US, with smelting requiring enormous amounts of electricity. Canadian politician Premier Danielle Smith rejected using oil as leverage, saying it would devastate Canada's economy, while former Alberta Premier Jason Kenney suggested that export taxes on oil could be a viable option if Trump escalates further.
