US Economy Experiences Modest Growth Amid Heightened Uncertainty
The US economy experienced a modest increase in economic activity since early July, according to the latest Beige Book. Ten of the twelve Federal Reserve Districts reported growth in the slight to moderate range, with two districts showing no change.
Consumer spending grew slightly on balance, but reports showed both heightened price sensitivity and solid high-end purchases. Auto sales were subdued due to downbeat consumer confidence, high fuel prices, and rising financing costs.
Tourism activity increased, with airlines reporting strong demand despite higher airfares. Manufacturing activity picked up across most districts, driven by ongoing strength in demand for defense and data center-related orders.
