US Economy Faces Perfect Storm of Inflation and Weakening Home Sales
The US economy continues to face challenges as inflation accelerates and home sales weaken. According to the Labor Department, consumer prices rose 3.4% in August compared to last year, with a monthly increase of 0.4%. This uptick in inflation is attributed to rising gas prices, which have spiked in the wake of renewed fighting in the Middle East.
The national average for diesel prices has surpassed $6 per gallon, up from $5.85 last week and $3.70 this time last year. Higher diesel prices will likely lead to increased costs for transportation and everyday goods.
In another sign of stubborn inflation, wholesale prices rose 5.4% in August from a year ago, with a monthly increase of 0.4%. This trend is expected to continue as the Iran conflict raises energy costs and President Trump's trade war with Canada may push up costs further.
