The US economy has shown resilience despite facing various challenges in recent years, including elevated inflation and a global energy shock. However, it is now facing an uncertain future with a return to fighting in Iran and potential rate increases from the Federal Reserve later this year.

The latest snapshot showed an economy that grew at a 1.5% pace in the second quarter, which is a slowdown from the first three months of the year when the economy grew at a 2.1% clip.

Consumer spending, which accounts for 70% of US economic activity, climbed at a 3.2% pace in the second quarter, while AI-fueled business spending was strong, increasing 8.4%. However, despite continued consumer spending and hiring strength, budgets are facing mounting strains due to elevated inflation.

Renewed fighting in Iran has sent oil prices higher, which could reverse progress on inflation made so far this year. The Federal Reserve may need to raise interest rates later this year if inflation remains above target, which is currently at 2%.
