US Economy Faces Uncertain Future Amid Iran Hostilities and Inflation Concerns
The US economy has shown resilience in recent years despite elevated inflation, tariffs, and a global energy shock. However, it's facing an uncertain future due to renewed hostilities in Iran and potential rate increases from the Federal Reserve later this year.
The latest economic snapshot showed growth at a 1.5% pace in the second quarter, down from 2.1% in the first three months of the year. Consumer spending, which accounts for 70% of US economic activity, climbed at a 3.2% pace, while AI-fueled business spending increased by 8.4%.
Despite this growth, budgets are facing mounting strains due to five years of elevated inflation and a recent slowdown in real wages. This increases the risk of a spending slowdown.
Hiring has strengthened this year, with employers adding an average of 92,000 jobs per month, compared to less than 10,000 last year. Unemployment has held steady at 4.2% in June, and layoffs are low.
