US Economy Grinds Through Slow Growth and High Inflation
The US economy experienced slight growth in the second quarter, but inflation remains a persistent challenge for the Federal Reserve. According to the Commerce Department's latest reports, the Personal Consumption Expenditures Price Index (PCE) core inflation rate is up 3.3% since last year, and core inflation grew by 0.3% in June.
The GDP growth rate for the second quarter was 1.5%, which falls on the lower end of economists' expectations. The Federal Reserve has maintained its interest rates at around 3.6% to control inflation, but it remains roughly double the Fed's 2% target.
The ongoing war in Iran and subsequent increase in oil prices have contributed to economic uncertainty. Oil prices peaked at $114 per barrel in May and were about $73 per barrel before the war began. The Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh emphasized that inflation remains elevated relative to the committee's 2% goal, and the committee will continue to work towards price stability.
