The US economy reported an unexpected decline in nonfarm payrolls, shedding 23,000 jobs in July, contrary to economists' expectations of growth.

Despite this job loss, the unemployment rate has fallen to 4.1% from 4.2% in June, according to the latest report from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

The number of unemployed Americans remained largely unchanged at 6.9 million from last month.

The job losses were concentrated in local government education and retail trade, with local government education losing 50,000 jobs and retail trade losing 19,000 positions.
