US Economy Stumbles: July Jobs Report Shows First Monthly Decline
The US economy unexpectedly shed 23,000 jobs in July, marking the first monthly decline in employment since months. The data released by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) showed nonfarm payrolls fell short of economists' expectations of an 80,000-job increase.
Economists had predicted a significant jump in hiring, but instead saw a sharp drop that reinforced signs that hiring momentum is weakening. Despite this decline, the unemployment rate ticked down to 4.1% from 4.2% in June, its lowest level since June 2025.
The healthcare sector remained one of the few bright spots, adding jobs during the month. However, employment declined in education, retail, and financial services. The weaker employment data comes as the Federal Reserve continues to balance slowing economic activity against lingering inflation risks.
