US Economy Suffers Unexpected Job Loss in July
The US economy has reported an unexpected loss of 23,000 jobs in July, contradicting analysts' predictions of up to 83,000 new non-farm payroll jobs. This decline comes after a slowdown from May's revised figure of 129,000 jobs and June's addition of 57,000 jobs.
The leisure and hospitality sector was particularly affected, losing 61,000 jobs. Despite the job losses, the unemployment rate saw a slight decrease from 4.2% to 4.1%. Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh described the jobs picture as 'steady', emphasizing the importance of controlling inflation.
Economists and policymakers are discussing the implications of this downturn in job creation. Seema Shah, chief global strategist at Principal Asset Management, noted that the slowdown in payroll growth suggests the Federal Reserve is under less pressure to adjust interest rates immediately.
