US Inflation Accelerates as Gas Prices Soar
The US inflation rate accelerated last month due to surging gas prices, which increased by 3.9% just from July to August. This spike in gas prices has left fuel costs more than 27% higher than a year ago, with the nationwide average cost of a gallon of gas at $4.30.
According to the Labor Department, the consumer price index rose 3.4% last month compared to a year ago, matching July's rate. However, inflation quickened month-to-month as costs jumped 0.4%, quadrupling the 0.1% increase seen in the previous month.
Experts believe that the rising fuel costs may spill into other areas of the economy, including shipping and transportation. Diesel prices have hit record highs above $6 a gallon, which could push up the cost of goods such as groceries.
The Federal Reserve is under pressure to boost interest rates next week, which could lead to higher mortgage and auto loan costs in the months ahead. Chair Kevin Warsh has signaled that he would need to see continued disinflation before leaving rates where they are.
