US Inflation Accelerates as Gas Prices Soar Amid Middle East Tensions
US inflation accelerated in August as gas prices surged to new heights following renewed fighting in the Middle East. This marked the third straight month of inflation, underscoring concerns about affordability amidst upcoming midterm elections.
The Labor Department reported that consumer price index rose 3.4% last month compared to a year ago, matching July's increase. However, on a monthly basis, inflation quickened as costs jumped 0.4% from July to August, up from an increase of just 0.1% the previous month.
Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh and other officials have signaled that interest rates can remain on hold only if disinflation continues, but Kathy Bostjancic, chief economist at Nationwide, noted that 'this is not one and done.' The ongoing tensions in the Middle East may prolong higher gas prices, which could spread through more of the economy.
