US Inflation Accelerates as Gas Prices Surge Amid Middle East Conflict

The US inflation rate accelerated in August as gas prices surged due to renewed fighting in the Middle East. The consumer price index rose 3.4% last month compared with a year ago, matching July's increase. However, on a monthly basis, inflation quickened, with costs jumping 0.4% from July to August, up from an increase of just 0.1% previously.

The figures show that inflation remains stubbornly elevated, more than five years after prices first soared as the economy emerged from the COVID pandemic. Persistent inflation has presented a major challenge for the Federal Reserve and has soured many voters on the Trump administration's economic track record.

Renewed fighting in the Middle East has pushed up energy costs, with the nationwide average cost of a gallon of gas jumping more than 7% from a month ago to $4.30. Hotel room prices and airfares also rose last month, while new and used cars became more expensive. Apparel and grocery prices were unchanged from July to August.

Many economists have long considered higher gas prices one of several 'one-time' shocks that are lifting inflation. However, Kathy Bostjancic, chief economist at Nationwide, warned that this may not be the case, stating 'This is not one and done... It's unclear when tensions in the Middle East are going to settle down.'

The Federal Reserve policymakers are split on whether to hike interest rates next week. Chair Kevin Warsh suggested he was leaning toward a rate hike, but did not commit to doing so at a specific time. Fed governor Christopher Waller emphasized August's figures and stated that if the monthly core figure rounds up to 0.3%, some analysts expect the Fed would then hike rates.
