US Inflation Holds Steady as Diesel Prices Soar Past $6
US inflation held steady at 3.4% in August, despite rising gasoline prices pushing up the cost of living. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that the overall inflation rate remained unchanged from July, with a key driver being higher fuel costs.
The price of diesel hit a new all-time high of over $6 per gallon on average in the US, driven by global oil prices hovering above $100 a barrel due to supply disruptions related to the ongoing conflict between the US and Iran.
Gasoline prices rose 3.9% last month alone, accounting for more than a third of inflation overall. Wages are failing to keep pace with rising living costs, with real average hourly earnings falling by 0.3% over the past year.
The current economic landscape has led to increased expectations that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates in an effort to slow price rises, with President Donald Trump stating that he does not think oil prices will decrease until the war with Iran ends after November's elections.
