US Inflation Rises Amid Soaring Gas Prices
The US inflation rate picked up in August due to higher gas prices caused by conflict in the Middle East. The consumer price index rose 3.4% from a year earlier, matching July's annual rate. On a monthly basis, however, prices increased 0.4% from July.
The nationwide average price of gasoline reached $4.30 per gallon, more than 7% higher than a month earlier. This increase can affect transportation, shipping, and air travel, potentially increasing costs across the broader economy.
President Donald Trump said he expected gas prices to remain under pressure until after the November midterm elections. The administration has taken steps to limit the impact of higher borrowing costs, including accelerating buybacks of Treasury bonds.
