US-Iran Peace Hopes Fuel Dollar Selling in NY Market
The New York foreign exchange market saw volatile trading on June 4th, with the dollar-yen pair falling to 157.22 yen before recovering to 157.70 yen.
The decline was driven by lower crude oil prices due to expectations of a US-Iran peace agreement and below-market job openings data from the JOLTS survey.
However, persistent rate hike expectations following comments from Philadelphia Federal Reserve President Patrick Harker limited the dollar's downside.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent expressed optimism about a potential peace agreement between the US and Iran, stating that 'there is a possibility of a peace agreement as early as today or tomorrow.'
The decline in crude oil prices accelerated selling, while the lower job openings data contributed to dollar selling on expectations of a narrowing US-Japan interest rate differential.
