US-Iran Talks Stall, Oil Prices Soar 5% Amid Geopolitical Tensions
Negotiations between the United States and Iran over reopening the Strait of Hormuz have stalled, sparking concerns about Middle East geopolitical risk and inflation. As a result, international oil prices surged approximately 5% on Monday (August 10), with West Texas Intermediate crude futures for September delivery reaching $82.13 per barrel.
The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index led the decline in major U.S. stock indices, plummeting nearly 3% after Intel announced a massive capital raising plan worth up to $15 billion. Nvidia and AMD stocks also fell sharply, with some analysts attributing their weakness to a Citigroup report predicting a bearish view on the memory chip market.
The Federal Reserve's hawkish commentary has added to concerns about inflation, with Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack suggesting that several rate hikes may be needed to bring inflation back to 2%. The upcoming U.S. July Consumer Price Index (CPI) data release is now closely watched by investors.
