US-Japan Coordination Fails to Reverses Yen's Depreciation Trend

The US and Japan have coordinated their efforts to stabilize the yen's exchange rate against the USD. This is not the first time Tokyo has intervened in the market, but it is a significant development as Washington has given its 'green light' for this intervention.

The weakening yen has become a systemic issue affecting both economies. For Japan, a weak yen drives up import costs and burdens the government with increased living expenses. The US, on the other hand, sees a depreciating yen reducing the competitive advantage from President Donald Trump's tariffs and increasing volatility in the Japanese bond market.

Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama and top foreign exchange official Atsushi Mimura have been working closely with their American counterparts. The Bank of Japan (BOJ) also shifted its approach, from public warnings to discreet coordination with Washington. This cooperation has led to a sharp recovery in the yen's value.

However, analysts believe that this intervention will only buy time and not reverse the trend. The root cause of the yen's weakening remains the BOJ's expansionary fiscal policy and slow pace of interest rate hikes. If the BOJ does not raise interest rates soon, the effectiveness of this large-scale intervention campaign is unlikely to last.
