US-Japan Currency Alliance Briefly Lifts Yen from Four-Decade Low
The recent joint intervention by the US and Japan to stabilize the yen has given their relations a temporary boost. The move, which included Washington's first yen purchase since 1998, aimed to prevent a further decline in the currency's value.
The Japanese currency had fallen to a four-decade low of almost 164 yen to the US dollar before the intervention. After the joint effort, the yen briefly rose to a three-month high of 155.2 on Friday but weakened slightly.
US President Donald Trump stated that his administration bought the yen to help Japan, signaling a more positive turn in relations after months of tense trade negotiations between the two countries.
