US-Japan Intervention Sends Yen into Turmoil

The Japanese yen has been at the center of attention in recent weeks following a coordinated intervention by the US and Japan, which aimed to stabilize the currency. The intervention was triggered by a record-setting low for the yen, with USD/JPY trading near ¥164 on July 30.

This marked a 40-year low for the yen, prompting concerns about its future value. The initial intervention weighed heavily on USD/JPY, causing losses of more than 400 pips (-2.4%) in just one day.

However, further intervention on July 31 prompted another decline of over 200 pips, leaving market participants on edge. Despite a tentative recovery to around ¥158, the underside of the pair's 200-day SMA, officials have warned that they are prepared to intervene again if necessary.
