The US job market showed strong growth in August, but this did not translate to the broadcast sector. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the number of people working across all broadcast companies and content providers decreased by 5% from July to August, resulting in a loss of around 5,000 jobs.

The BLS reports that there were 328,400 people employed in the broadcast sector last month. Meanwhile, the ad sector's workforce also declined, with a 0.8% decrease and a total of 476,000 employees, down approximately 6,900 jobs from a year earlier across the entire industry.

However, the overall US job market showed positive trends in August. The BLS states that nonfarm payroll employment increased by 162,000, exceeding the average monthly gain of 31,000 over the past 12 months and surpassing analyst predictions for the month. The unemployment rate remained steady at 4.1%.

Kory Kantenga, Head of Economics at LinkedIn, notes that while the report shows broad-based payroll gains alongside steady unemployment and labor force participation, strength is not the same as acceleration. He points out that hiring remains more than 20% below its pre-pandemic level, and jobs available per applicant are 6% below where they stood a year ago.
