US Job Market Surges in August, Boosting Trump Ahead of Midterms
The US job market showed strong growth in August, exceeding expectations and providing a boost to President Donald Trump's Republican Party ahead of the upcoming midterm elections. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employment increased by 162,000 jobs in August, while the unemployment rate remained steady at 4.1 percent. This growth was driven by expansion in the restaurant and bar sectors, as well as a rebound in public school employment.
The strong job numbers also revised up June and July's job counts by a combined 55,000, indicating continued steady growth in the labor market. The data will be seen as positive for Trump, whose party is facing a challenge from Democrats in November's elections.
However, stock markets reacted negatively to the news, with investors focusing on the Federal Reserve's next interest rate-setting meeting later this month. Strong job growth typically allows the central bank to focus on its other mandate: keeping long-term inflation at 2 percent.
Average hourly earnings increased by 3.1 percent year-on-year, but still lagged behind inflation, indicating that many workers are seeing their salaries contract in real terms.
