US Jobs Data Leaves Markets Reassessing Fed Policy Impact
The US labor market's performance in July has been met with mixed signals after the release of the Non-Farm Payrolls (NFP) report. The headline figure showed a loss of -23,000 jobs, which initially put downward pressure on the US dollar.
However, upon closer examination, it appears that government employment declined by approximately 53,000 jobs, while private-sector hiring remained positive with around 30,000 new jobs added.
The unemployment rate unexpectedly fell to 4.1% from 4.2%, but this was largely due to a reduction in labor force participation rather than an actual improvement in job market conditions.
As a result of these mixed signals, markets are reassessing the implications for Federal Reserve policy and the US dollar is under pressure, providing support for major currencies such as the euro.
