US Jobs Report Sparks Rate Hike Bets Amid Robust Labor Market
The US jobs report released on Friday significantly exceeded expectations, causing Wall Street to pause its advance. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, nonfarm payrolls increased by 162k in August, more than triple the anticipated 55k figure.
The unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.1%, while total nonfarm payrolls for June and July were revised upward by 55k.
This robust jobs data led traders to raise their bets on a Federal Reserve interest rate hike later this month, as the combination of a resilient labor market and stubbornly high inflation hints at an overheating economy.
