US nonfarm payrolls saw their first monthly decline in years, falling by 23,000 jobs in July. This unexpected contraction reinforced concerns that employment momentum is slowing down.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that hiring weakened across several sectors, including local government education, which shed 50,000 positions.

Employment in retail trade also declined, with warehouse clubs and supercenters cutting 21,000 jobs. Financial activities lost 14,000 jobs, while healthcare added 22,000 jobs at a slower pace than the previous year.
