US Labor Market Edges Up as Layoffs Remain Low
The US labor market showed signs of continued improvement as initial claims for state unemployment benefits dipped to a seasonally adjusted 206,000 for the week ended September 5. This marks a slight decline from the previous week and is consistent with a labor market that is regaining its footing after facing challenges in spring and summer.
The number of Americans filing claims for unemployment benefits has been stuck within a narrow range of 189,000-212,000 since mid-July, suggesting that layoffs remain low. The government reported last week that nonfarm payrolls jumped 162,000 jobs in August, the largest gain in five months.
The unemployment rate remains unchanged at 4.1%, but long-term unemployment remains a concern, with the median duration of joblessness near four-and-a-half-year highs in August.
