The US labor market showed signs of improvement in January, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The nonfarm payrolls increased by 130,000, surpassing the Dow Jones consensus estimate of 55,000. This marks a significant increase from December's gain of 48,000.

The unemployment rate also edged lower to 4.3%, below the forecast of staying unchanged at 4.4% from the prior month. The report comes as a relief to concerns about the state of the US labor market.

However, the Bureau of Labor Statistics released a benchmark update in February, which revised down the nonfarm employment level for March 2025 by 898,000. This revision significantly impacted the jobs story, with total job growth being revised from +584,000 to +181,000.
