US Labor Market Surges Back to Life with 162,000 New Jobs in August
The US labor market experienced a significant boost in August as employers added 162,000 jobs, exceeding expectations and ending a period of lackluster hiring. The unemployment rate remained at 4.1%, with average hourly wages rising by 3.1% from the previous year.
The Labor Department revised its previous estimates, adding 55,000 jobs to June and July payrolls, and reported that employers created 21,000 jobs in July, a marked improvement from the original figure of 23,000 job losses. Restaurants and bars added 59,000 jobs last month, while construction companies and manufacturers added 22,000 and 16,000 jobs respectively.
Despite the strong hiring numbers, inflation remains a pressing concern, with voters increasingly frustrated by rising costs, particularly fuel prices that have hit record levels since the US and Israel attacked Iran in late February. The Federal Reserve is likely to focus on tackling inflation after the recent jobs report.
