The US labor market showed significant improvement in August as job growth surged sharply. The Labor Department reported that nonfarm payrolls increased by 162,000 jobs last month, exceeding economists' forecasts of a 56,000 gain. This rebound is attributed to strength across various sectors, including leisure and hospitality employment, which rose by 62,000 jobs.

Leisure and hospitality employment saw significant growth, with restaurants and bars adding 59,000 jobs. Local government education also contributed to the increase, adding 42,000 jobs after a decrease in July. Healthcare employment rose by 13,000, but at a slower pace than the average monthly gain of 32,000 over the past year.

Financial markets reacted positively to the report, with interest rate hike bets increasing for the Federal Reserve's September meeting. The odds now stand at about 65% after previously being around 55%. Treasury yields rose in response, and the dollar gained against a basket of currencies.
