The US nonfarm payroll employment saw a decline of 23,000 in July, according to the latest figures released by the US Bureau of Labour Statistics. This marks a shift from the period of modest growth experienced in the national job market in July.

Employment declined in specific sectors, with local government education experiencing a drop of 50,000 jobs and retail trade shedding 19,000 positions. Financial activities also saw a downward trend, losing 14,000 jobs due to reductions in credit intermediation and insurance carriers. The total number of unemployed individuals remained at 6.9 million.

The unemployment rate held steady at 4.1% in July, with some demographic groups experiencing decreases in unemployment rates. However, the long-term unemployed, representing individuals out of work for 27 weeks or more, accounted for 25.5% of all unemployed persons.
