US Politicians Spar Over Central Bank Digital Currencies
A recent report on central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) reveals a shift in U.S. policy under the Trump administration, framing CBDCs as threats to financial stability and privacy.
The Biden-era approach, which called for timely assessments of potential benefits and risks, has been replaced by explicit support for dollar-backed stablecoins as the path forward for digital dollar innovation.
Congress has already moved aggressively on the CBDC question, passing three bills in the 119th Congress that would permanently ban Federal Reserve issuance of a CBDC. One measure was incorporated into the National Defense Authorization Act, while another is a broader cryptocurrency regulatory bill.
The Federal Reserve itself has maintained a cautious posture, outlining necessary design features for a CBDC, including privacy protections and intermediation through financial institutions. The central bank stated that it does not intend to proceed with issuance of a CBDC without clear support from the executive branch and Congress.
