The US August producer price index (PPI) came in at 5.4%, surpassing expectations of 5.3%. This represents a small upside surprise, given the revised prior reading of 4.8%.

Breaking down the numbers, the PPI for final demand showed a monthly increase of 0.4%, in line with forecasts. However, ex-food and energy inflation rose to 4.6% year-over-year, matching expectations.

The revised prior reading of 4.2% ex-food and energy has been adjusted upwards to 4.3%. Additionally, ex-food, energy, and trade prices increased by 0.3% month-over-month, slightly below the expected 0.4% rise.

Given the importance placed on inflation reports this week by the Federal Reserve, this reading is considered meaningful. As a result, dollar strength has been observed in response to the data.
