US Producer Price Index Rises 0.4% in August as Energy Costs Rebound
The US Producer Price Index (PPI) rose by 0.4% in August, as expected, due to energy costs rebounding after two consecutive months of decline.
The increase was driven by a 4.2% surge in energy prices, largely attributed to renewed hostilities between the United States and Iran pushing oil prices higher.
Excluding food and energy components, core PPI increased by only 0.2%, below economists' expectations for a 0.3% rise.
The data comes ahead of the Federal Reserve's policy meeting next week, where policymakers will assess inflation pressures amid a still-elevated labor market.
