US Producer Prices Rise 0.4% in August as Energy Costs Rebound
The US Producer Price Index (PPI) rose by 0.4% in August, matching expectations and keeping inflation pressures elevated ahead of the Federal Reserve's policy meeting next week.
The Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that energy prices rebounded with a 4.2% increase after two consecutive months of declines, providing the biggest boost to the overall PPI reading.
Excluding food and energy components, the core PPI increased by only 0.2%, below economists' expectations for a 0.3% rise. However, producer goods prices surged by 1.1% during the month.
The data comes as investors and economists assess whether inflation remains too high for the Federal Reserve to ease policy aggressively, despite the central bank's focus on labor-market conditions.
