US Sells Euros, Buys Yen in Rare Joint Intervention with Japan

According to recent reports, the US Treasury Department conducted an unusual joint operation with Japan's central bank to prop up the yen. On August 5th, Washington sold euros to buy Japanese yen, marking a rare instance of coordinated intervention. The Federal Reserve Bank of New York executed this sale on behalf of the US Treasury through Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley.

The move aims to shield US bond markets from potential losses as Japan's weakness in the yen threatens to impact its massive holdings of US Treasuries, valued at over $1.1 trillion. Tokyo confirmed the joint operation and central bank data suggested that it may have spent up to $36.58 billion buying yen last Friday.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent downplayed concerns about signaling a desire for broad-based dollar weakness by selling euros instead of dollars, stating that it was simply a reallocation of resources. However, some analysts questioned the decision, arguing that using the FIMA repo facility and not funding the purchases with dollars would be more effective.

Japanese finance officials plan to use this facility for future interventions, while Bessent suggested that expanding its capacity could allow the Bank of Japan to borrow up to $60 billion. Despite the joint effort, analysts warned that a policy shift is needed to sustain the yen's strength and alleviate concerns about the country's heavy debt load.
