US Senators Push to Repeal Trump's Tariffs Amid Trade War with Canada
US Senators Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) and Peter Welch (D-VT) have announced legislation to repeal all tariffs levied under Section 338 of the Tariff Act. The move comes after President Trump imposed a 50% tariff on Canada, prompting dollar-for-dollar retaliatory measures from Ottawa. According to the senators, this trade war will be detrimental to New York's economy, which imports over $20 billion annually from Canada.
The Banning Antiquated Duties and Delivering Equitable American Levies (BAD DEAL) Act aims to refund Americans for all duties paid under this authority. The bill, which will be introduced in September, has already been filed in the House of Representatives by Rep. Brad Schneider (D-IL-10).
Senator Gillibrand emphasized that President Trump's tariffs have made life more expensive for New Yorkers and are a 'bad deal' for American families. Senator Welch echoed this sentiment, stating that imposing on-again, off-again tariffs is the opposite of how they should treat close friends and allies.
