US States Sue Trump Over New Tariffs on Forced Labor Imports
Twenty-five US states have filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration over new tariffs imposed on countries, including the European Union. The tariffs range from 10% to 12.5% and are aimed at forcing countries to crack down on imports produced by forced labor.
The states argue that these tariffs are a pretext for replacing earlier ones that were struck down by the Supreme Court in February. The new tariffs took effect after temporary tariffs expired last month.
New York Attorney General Letitia James said, 'After losing at the Supreme Court, the administration is once again trying to illegally raise taxes on families and businesses with a new round of tariffs.'
The lawsuit joins two others filed by small businesses in July, which argue that the government did not adequately establish its case against each specific economy or spell out how the tariffs will eliminate the specified practice they are being levied for.
