US Stocks Dip Amid Weak Retail Sales Report
The US stock market experienced a modest decline on Friday after a report showed surprisingly weak retail sales data. The S&P 500 slipped 0.2% from its record high set the previous day, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average dipped 107 points and the Nasdaq composite sank 0.3%. This pullback in spending could potentially ease pressure on inflation, which remains higher than desired.
However, this data also raises concerns about a slowing economy, particularly when combined with last week's weak job market report. The Federal Reserve faces a challenging task in addressing both high inflation and economic stagnation. Jennifer Timmerman from Wells Fargo Investment Institute cautioned against overreacting to the retail sales data, suggesting it might be a temporary correction after earlier months were boosted by unusual factors.
The University of Michigan's preliminary survey indicated that consumer sentiment is weakening more than expected, particularly among older, lower-income groups who can be significantly impacted by inflation. In other market news, Reddit stock jumped 12.6% after its inclusion in the S&P 500 index, while Applied Materials fell 5.1% despite reporting stronger profits and revenue.
Despite the losses on Friday, the S&P 500 closed out a third consecutive winning week, its longest such streak since May. In other global market news, London's FTSE 100 slipped 0.2%, while South Korea's Kospi jumped 2.4% for its third straight gain.
