US Stocks Edge Closer to Records as Inflation Eases

The US stock market inched closer to an all-time high on Thursday as inflation appeared less severe. The S&P 500 climbed 0.5% and was poised to surpass its record set last week.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 123 points, or 0.2%, while the Nasdaq composite rose 0.6%. Stocks benefited from easing oil prices, which have been fluctuating wildly in recent weeks.

Inflation at the wholesale level reached 4.7% last month, a slight improvement over June's 5.5% rate and better than economists had anticipated. This development has traders speculating that the Federal Reserve might hold off on raising interest rates.

A lower inflation rate could alleviate pressure on the economy, which would be a welcome relief for investors. The Fed's decision to increase or maintain current interest rates will have far-reaching implications for borrowing costs and economic growth.
