US Stocks Fall on Strong Jobs Report, Interest Rate Hike Looms

The US stock market fell on Friday following a stronger-than-expected jobs report. The S&P 500 dropped 0.4%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.5%. The Nasdaq composite lost 0.3%.

The Labor Department reported that employers added 162,000 jobs last month, exceeding forecasts of 65,000. This increase could give the Federal Reserve more leeway to raise interest rates to combat inflation, which has been running above 3% due to rising oil prices amid the US-Iran conflict.

Terry Sandven, chief equity strategist at US Bank Asset Management Group, noted that 'Today's jobs report does lean toward the Fed increasing rates.' However, he emphasized that a rate hike is 'not a foregone conclusion.'
