US stock markets closed sharply lower on Wednesday after the Federal Reserve's announcement to leave interest rates unchanged.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell over 1,100 points, while the Nasdaq and S&P 500 lost more than 1.5% each.

The Fed voted 9-3 to maintain interest rates at 3.5% to 3.75%, citing inflation above its 2% target.

Renewed fighting in the Middle East and rising oil prices contributed to investors' concerns, with Brent crude oil reaching $91 a barrel after being as low as $72 this month.
