US Strait of Hormuz Blockade Sparks Global Economic Crisis

Instruments

The Strait of Hormuz is currently blocked due to tensions between Iran and the United States. Trump administration officials, including Scott Bessent, have stated that they will not permit trade through the strait until certain conditions are met.

These conditions include Iran's unconditional surrender and the US's ability to collect tolls on OPEC trade. This has led to a situation where oil prices are artificially inflated, with countries like Japan being forced to pay higher prices for oil on delivery.

The US Treasury Department has negotiated a deal with Japan to provide dollar credits in exchange for Japanese holdings of US Treasury bonds. This allows Japan to use these credits to buy yen and stabilize its currency.

This deal is seen as a test case for other countries, which will be forced to borrow from the US to pay for increased oil prices due to trade shutdowns.
