US Takes Fresh Aim at Canadian Economy with Tariffs and Import Bans
The United States has taken further retaliatory measures against Canada's economy in response to bilateral trade negotiations breaking down. The new tariffs and import bans are a relatively minor escalation of the ongoing trade war.
The U.S. administration has added 110 products from Canada to the list of imports subject to a 50% tariff, effective September 15. However, it has also removed 10 product codes from this list, roughly balancing out the dollar value of imports affected.
Additionally, a subset of products previously targeted with 50% tariffs will now face an outright import ban as of September 29. These include alcoholic beverages, dairy products, and certain motorcycles.
The impact on Canada's economy is expected to be relatively small, with Section 338 tariffs continuing to affect only a small share of trade (5%). The real risk remains further escalation into a tit-for-tat trade war covering a larger share of trade.
