US Tariffs on Canadian Goods Spark Trade Dispute Fears in Southern Colorado
A new trade dispute between the US and Canada is causing concerns for consumers in Southern Colorado. The US has imposed a 50% tariff on billions of dollars worth of Canadian products, with retaliation from Canada set to begin on September 8.
Dr. Joe Craig, an economics professor at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs, warns that some effects may be immediate. He notes that consumers may struggle to find their favorite Canadian liquor, as tariffs have already impacted product availability and prices at local businesses.
Assistant Manager Scott Chisholm at Freedom Liquor in Colorado Springs said they're feeling the pinch. With reduced product availability and higher costs due to tariffs, popular Canadian products like Crown Royal Canadian whisky may become harder to find or more expensive.
The trade dispute's uncertainty has businesses worried about its long-term impact on the economy. Dr. Craig cautions that if tariffs remain in place, they could eventually influence consumer behavior and lead to spending cuts, which would be detrimental to the overall economy.
