US Tariffs Slam Canada's Economy, Threaten Tens of Thousands of Jobs
The imposition of 50% tariffs on Canada by President Donald Trump has sent shockwaves through the Canadian economy, threatening tens of thousands of jobs and potentially pricing out Canadian firms from the US market.
According to economists, including Joseph Steinberg of the University of Toronto, the new levies will have a devastating impact on industries such as forestry, machinery, electronics, furniture, toys, and products made largely of plastic. Up to 90,000 jobs in Canada could be lost, with companies not directly affected by tariffs also feeling the pinch.
The forest industry is particularly hard hit, facing additional 50% tariffs on exports that include plywood, laminated wood products, fiberboard, paper, tissue for toilet paper, and packaging. The Forest Products Association of Canada has expressed its support for Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's decision to walk away from trade negotiations with the US.
Citing 'very soft markets', Derek Nighbor, president of the Forest Products Association of Canada, stated that the tariffs are a major concern for his industry. However, others are more cautious, noting that while the tariffs may not have a sweeping effect on Canada's economy as a whole, they could still cause significant damage to individual companies and industries.
