US Treasury's Currency Intervention: A Hidden Agenda?

The US Treasury's recent intervention in currency markets has sparked concerns about a new round of protectionism and currency wars. However, according to Harold James, Professor of History and International Affairs at Princeton University, the Trump administration's real motive may be more nuanced.

James suggests that the US is not trying to prevent a currency war, but rather to protect its own interests by propping up the Japanese yen. The yen has been falling in value due to Japan's high government debt-to-GDP ratio of 248%, which makes it difficult for the country to implement fiscal contraction or raise interest rates.

The US Treasury has sold euros and purchased yen, with a target of $5-10 billion worth. However, James notes that this intervention will likely have limited success in achieving its desired exchange-rate effect, as markets will treat it with increasing skepticism. In fact, the yen has already started to fall again since the initial post-intervention surge.

James also points out that the US Treasury's actions are not just about helping Japan, but also about protecting the value of US Treasuries. By selling euros and purchasing yen, the US is sending a signal that it will not approve of other countries offloading US debt.
