US Yen Purchase Hinted at by Treasury Secretary's Notepad
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's notepad appears to reveal a possible US purchase of Japanese yen, according to a Reuters photograph taken during President Donald Trump's cabinet meeting at Camp David on Friday.
The image shows the words 'To Do' followed by 'Buy Japanese Yen (JPY) $5-10 bil', which was captured at 11.33am US Eastern Time.
A US Treasury spokesperson did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment on the notepad or whether the Treasury had intervened in the yen market.
The development comes after Japanese authorities stepped in to support the yen, helping it recover from levels close to its weakest point in nearly 40 years. The yen strengthened to 159.09 per dollar after intervention-related reports, recovering from 163.65 per dollar on Thursday.
