USD/CAD Edges Toward Key Resistance Amid Escalating Trade Tensions
The USD/CAD exchange rate is edging closer to its 20-day exponential moving average (EMA) as trade tensions between the US and Canada escalate. The recent round of tariff threats from Washington has weakened the Canadian dollar against the greenback, pushing the pair toward a key technical level.
According to data from the US Census Bureau, Canada accounted for approximately 17% of US goods imports in 2024. The new tariffs are expected to impact sectors such as manufacturing and construction, potentially slowing Canada's economic growth. As a result, market participants have priced in a higher probability of the Bank of Canada (BoC) cutting interest rates later this year.
From a technical perspective, the 20-day EMA has emerged as a crucial resistance level for USD/CAD. A decisive break above this level could open the door for further gains toward the 50-day EMA at 1.3600, while failure to breach it may lead to a retest of support at 1.3500.
